5.56 vs .223 vs Wylde Chambers by Aaron Henderson

box_bg_l.gif.

I've been asked at times what chamber is best or is this Bolt Carrier Group or other part 5.56 or .223.  The key point here is that whether the rifle is 5.56 or .223 or Wylde represents the cut of the barrel chamber only.  A Wylde chamber, is a hybrid between .223 and 5.56.  The 5.56x45 NATO is NOT exactly the same as a .223 Rem. The 5.56 barrel chamber spec allows for slightly longer bullets for more powder and higher pressures. The .223 has a tighter chamber around the neck and is shorter which allows for a bit better accuracy. You can shoot .223 ammo in a 5.56 chamber (it fits easily), but it is DANGEROUS to shoot 5.56 (surplus for instance) ammo in a tighter .223 chamber. I don't sell any .223 chambers and they are seldom seen outside specialized competition rifles. What the Wylde chamber does is allow for 5.56 ammo but with a slightly tighter chamber for better accuracy than a normal military 5.56 chamber.  Therefore a Wylde shoots both 5.56 and .223 safely with good accuracy. This is a simplified explanation and you can search the internet and read about it in detail for greater understanding.
