In recent years, the firearms field has seen the introduction of revolutionary new metal coatings and surface treatments that deliver unprecedented levels of corrosion protection, wear resistance and reliability. A cadre of firearms performance experts formed WMD Guns to leverage these new technologies to offer a full spectrum of premium products, coatings and services to the firearms industry. WMD can help maximize the performance and durability of any firearm by coating key components with NiB-X – an exclusive nickel boron formulation that reduces friction, minimizes wear, and eliminates the need for lubrication.
Who makes WMD Bolt Carrier Groups?
All manufacturers Bolt Carrier Groups including Colt, LMT, Bravo etc. only produce some of their parts and outsource other components to other military manufacturers. These licensing agreements are proprietary. WMD only buys from qualified established milspec vendors. All parts are procured from suppliers to the military and the military industrial complex. The key difference is not only who you buy from, but to what specifications and standards are ordered. Several high quality vendors make parts out of different materials, and price the added processes independently. That is if you want a stripped bolt of 8620 it is $XX, 9310 $XX and Carpenter 158 $XX. If you want it heat treated it's $X more, shot peened $X more, MPI = $X and HP is $X. So, in total, the BCG quality comes from selecting a quality manufacturer, made to selected material standards, tests, and then Quality Assured to those standards. Finally, applying a high quality coating is imperative. WMD is mindful of the consumers quest for information and provides the technical specifications for the bolts and other components on each product page detailing component specifications, e.g. bolts are highest quality material: Carpenter 158, heat treated, shot peened and MPI tested. They do not High Pressure test each bolt as this reduces the fatigue life of the part by a significant amount (some research shows over 10%) and Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) provides individualized inspection.
Why Choose WMD over FailZero?
WMD adds heavy duty extractor springs and buffer rings in the bolt assembly. They've also gone to the improved flat sided carrier and the units are all assembled by a classically trained gunsmith. All this and the NiB-X BCG is $30 less than FZ! Another big difference is that WMD is a gun company staffed by gun industry professionals. The coating is applied in a high quality plating shop that is currently AS91000 certifed and coating for aerospace and automotive customers. They are also NADCAP certified (highest quality standards you can achieve in aerospace).
Will this coating flake?
In a 9 month test of over 10,000 rounds WMD saw no flaking, chipping or spalling. An agency tested to 4,000 rounds and sent WMD a blanket purchase order. The Air Force successfully tested a BCG we coated for an OEM with over 4,500 rounds on it and no negative findings.
